On behalf of the Mad Rockers FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Team from Bob Jones High School and James Clemens High School, I would like to invite you to an open house on Sunday, February 15th from 3:00-5:00 pm at our build and practice facility located in the Intergraph complex at 300 Dunlop Blvd (See directions below, 232 Clipper Lane if you use GPS). Since the rules for this year’s game “Recycle Rush” were announced on January 2nd we have spent 5 days a week building a brand new 120 pound robot to play the game. This year’s game requires robots to move and stack recycling containers in designated areas of the 54’x27′ playing field. Placing a plastic trash can on top on stacked recycling containers earns extra points.
The FIRST competition requires our students to learn and practice systems engineering, software design, computer aided design and modeling, controls and control theory, mechanical and electrical engineering, prototyping and construction techniques in order to design and build the robot. Each student worked on several aspects of the robot, learning teamwork and valuable skills for their future.
This year we designed and built our robot to gather recycling containers, stack them internally, then place them in the designated scoring area. The robot also picks up trash cans to put on top of the stacked recycling containers. We have a 6 wheel drive system, dual cameras and controllers for sensing and tracking direction and range to objects and an elevator storage system. We will be bagging up and sealing the robot on Tuesday, February 17th in accordance with the competition rules, then we’ll prepare for competition season.
On Sunday February 22, we’ll participate in the big robotics demonstration at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Davidson bldg. Please join us as area robotics teams demonstrate their robots for the public.
In March we will travel with the robot and 20 students from the team to compete against 56 other teams in the Bayou Regional in Kenner, LA outside of New Orleans. A week later we’ll compete against 58 teams in the Peachtree Regional in Atlanta, GA.
Please join us on Saturday February 15th to see the robot in action, meet the team, and find out more about the FIRST robotics competition which offers over $19 Million in scholarship opportunities to participating students.
